H.264/AVC
A video codec, defined in the MPEG-4 Part 10 standard, which produces high-quality video at low data rates by using a combination of advanced intra- and inter-frame compression techniques. Often known simply as H.264.
MP3
A popular audio compression algorithm, defined in Part 3 of the MPEG-2 standard, which uses perceptual coding.
MP4
The standard file format for MPEG-4 data.
MPEG
Motion Picture Experts Group. Usually used to refer to the set of standards for video and multimedia defined by this group. These include MPEG-2, the compression method used for DVD video and MPEG-4 Part 10 (H.264/AVC), a high-quality, low bit rate codec, increasingly used on the Internet.
MPEG-2
An MPEG standard defining the video codec used for DVDs. Also includes the definition of MP3.
MPEG-4
A multi-part standard, including several video and audio codecs and a file format, designed to support a range of multimedia data at bit rates from 10 kbits per second to 300 Mbits per second or higher.
MPEG-4 Part 2
A video codec that is a refinement of MPEG-2, now superseded by H.264/AVC.
The glossary contains nearly 700 terms. Except for some common mis-spellings and Americanisms, definitions are only returned if they match the term you entered exactly. If you cannot find a definition for a term you expect to be in the glossary, try consulting the full list of terms.
